The History of Sterling BMW

Sterling BMW has a long and unique history in Orange County, beginning as the very first BMW dealership in the region and evolving into the Newport Beach landmark it is today.

Sterling BMW Locations Over the Years

3200, 3150, 3000, 2930 West Coast Hwy, Newport Beach, CA 92663

Previously: 1540 Jamboree Rd, Newport Beach, CA 92660

1970 – The Beginning

In 1970, Leroy “Roy” Carver brought BMW to his Rolls-Royce dealership at 1540 Jamboree Rd in Newport Beach, operating as Roy Carver Rolls Royce and BMW. This store was the first BMW dealer in Orange County.

A common misconception is that Crevier BMW was the first BMW dealership in Orange County. In reality, Crevier opened its doors in 1971, one year after Roy Carver’s BMW franchise. Technically and historically, Sterling BMW is the first BMW dealer in Orange County, California.

1984 – Sale to Sterling Motors

In 1984, Roy Carver sold Rolls-Royce and BMW to John Belanger, who would become the owner of Sterling Motors, Ltd. Following the sale, the dealership name was changed to Sterling Rolls Royce & BMW (Sterling Motors, Ltd.).

1988 & 1991 – The Sale of Sterling Motors

In 1988, John Belanger sold the Rolls-Royce franchise to Steven Bren, son of Donald Bren (owner of The Irvine Company).

In October 1991, John Belanger sold Sterling Motors, Ltd. (BMW) to the Minor family under Mr. Wayne Minor.

John Belanger continued to oversee the BMW center alongside Mr. Wayne Minor and his son Preston Minor until John’s passing in 2011.

1997 – The Move to Pacific Coast Highway

In 1997, Sterling BMW moved from its original Jamboree Road location to a much larger, prominent facility on Pacific Coast Highway.

The Pacific Coast Highway facility was designed by Pettett Architects and built in 1986, funded by Lee West (through Tokai Credit Corp.) as part of a major expansion for his Jaguar line under Newport Imports Inc.

In the 1990s, a new luxury tax and an economic recession caused a significant decline in luxury vehicle sales. This downturn ultimately put Newport Imports out of business and made the Pacific Coast Highway facility available for Sterling BMW’s important relocation and growth.
